Hey guys,
new to this forum, and boat motors (coincidentally:rolleyes
. I bought a sailboat and this motor was on it.
I suspect the last owner left it in its enclosed hole for a long time and it never was serviced. So I changed plugs and fliter and fired it up. it ran reasonably well for a short time then began to stall. had it going well but would not idle took it for a cruise around the bay and after a short time the engine stalled and would not start again (or even cough sputter or smoke). i put my hand on the thermostat and it was quite warm but i could still keep my hand on it (uncomfortably warm but not spitting hot by any means) pulled the thermostat and it wasnt opening. Engine cools down and still no fire! seems like i have no spark.
getting back was done with oars
so I bring the motor to a local guy who fixes outboards
hey puts a new sensor in it and gets spark back, everything good that way.
but the engine will not go. It only ran once with the choke in cold and throttle low, and it only ran for maybe 15 seconds then nothing! sounds like a carb issue, so we cleaned up the float bowl with compressed air and wd40 and it was quite clean already. still nothing. the bottom pug is getting wet and the top plug is not as bad but wet also. put three different sets of plugs in, a known good coil and ecu , also checked the wooddrift pin on the flywheel (flywheel was quite rusty even on the magnets but I should get something right?. we have good spark have checked with a calibrated tester also i have good compression 75lb top and 71 bottom
my mechanic is stumped ! and so am I to say the least
the fact it would run for even 15 seconds then nothing; this is a weird one.
any insight into this would be really appreciated.
thanks
tony
