Just wanted to share...

Now I just gotta finagle the rebuilt 3.0 IN! :D

Replaced a v-8 block the same way.
Just lifted it up on the transom(2 people) after removing everything.
Needed to marinize it anyway.
If you take everything off it's not that heavy.

Chris, for years I had a similar lift system with a roller bearing trolley for the chain fall.
It was self supporting, ran perpendicular the hull, and would easily accept a 11 foot beam hull.
It gave me plenty of room off to the side to raise or lower an engine.

It was more along the lines of this, but was not portable.

I also still have one. 12'wide goes up 14' and will hold a 6-71 with no worries. But since I have a building with a hoist and a travel lift to use, the gantry was put in mothballs.

.......................

Marsha was doing just fine until the tree branch snapped.
As soon as she returns home from the hospital, she will begin the clean-up, body and paint repair, and will start looking for a new engine.
:)

Bob and his father-in-law (not yet having heard about Marsha's mishap) were also doing fine............
........... right up to the point of both the tree branch AND the engine falling to the ground.
:)
Both escaped injuries.

Perhaps a little sarcastic humor here....
..... but if you're going to do this, for God's sake shore up the tree branch, and take all safety precautions that you can.

Marsha, should have used a BIGGER branch.
That can't be any more than 4-5"
Also WAY out on the limb.
Yes shore it up.
OK,now who can identify the car in the pic?
Was at work one day, getting a 28ft with twin 350's I/O's ready to deliver.
The owner was there, he was sticking his head up under the drives and generally getting in the way.
He's stuck his head up under the drive again and I said, you better move back as the lift was at it's max load.
He said , Oh I'll be ok.
At that time the rear of the lift let go and the boat dropped onto the trailer.(we were switching from a shop trailer to a new one).
When it dropped he still had his hand on the swim platform. He had just pulled his head out from under the platform.
I said SEE I told you NOT to do that,You touching the platform made it fall.
By that time he'd turned white as a ghost and started shaking.
He just closed his mouth and RAN to his car and didn't come back for 2 days.
He was supposed to take delivery that day.

  1. I just heard from Marsha. She is back home, and is recovering nicely.
She says that she'll never use a small branch again.... let alone attach so far away from the main tree trunk.

  2. Judging from the grill cover...... I'd say it's a 1970's sump'n Ken and Barbie car!

Before I had the tractor and loader bucket I had an A-frame type lift I made from 2 by. I think I had a double 2x12 across the top. It was tall enough so that I could lift the engines up and drive the boats out from under (they were on trailers). Then I could drop the engines down, put them on a stand and wheel them inside.
It all came apart and leaned up against the barn when not used.

Kim, when I was young my grandfather owned his own log truck biz. Once in a while he'd take me with him to the forest.
Out at the site, a similar lifting device was called a "spar pole". The winch was called a "donkey".
