Johnson 50HP starter motor issue

Rehabbing a long-stored 2000 Johnson50HP. Installed new starter motor, cranks engine as it should but continues running when key is turned from “start” to “run”position. Starter motor turns off when ignition is turned off, does not run when key is turned back on to “run” position. Turn to “start”, engine cranks but again starter motor keeps running when key is turned back to “run”. I replaced solenoid this morning, same thing. Is this likely an ignition switch problem at the console?

Best see what is wired up on the switch.----Sounds like a mistake was made.

Thanks. It worked properly before Imounted the controls on the pontoon boat. The switch feels a littleodd, not quite the same definition on the run and start positions.Still all factory connectors, no visible splices, 6-8 wires comingoff the switch, will check for a short and search for a diagram.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch.
Got a new one on the way. Still working with the tilt/trim, previous owner swears it worked. No power to it, relays test good, still digging through YouTube videos, learning. Kinda fun in a way, the process of discovery and accomplishment, but sure wish the boat was in the water...will be soon. Thanks so much for the responses, really helps confirm my thoughts.
