Johnson 48 SPL vs New Yamaha 4 stroke 40 hp.

I wouldn't know, but the people who might know on this forum would need to know what year Yamaha you want to compare it with.
 
Another consideration is whether you do your own maintenance or need to run to a shop for every hiccup. ---

How would that make any difference? I just want to know how the 40 Yamaha stacks up to a 48 SPL. I talked to a man who has a boat identical to mine, he replaced his 48 with a 50 Yamaha 4 stroke. He said the 50 was heavier, and sat his boat down in the water more, and was not as fast. But, the 50 Yamaha 40 stroke weighs 247. while the 40 Yamaha 4 stroke is 214 and the 48 SPl is about 185 lbs. I was thinking of getting the 40 Yamaha, but not the 50. It is just too heavy.

I would disagree with that. There are too many 40 hp Mercurys that are screaming on the bayou and smoking the 50 hp OMCs. And, around 95 or so, Mariner made a 40 hp, that was a detuned Mercury 4cyl 50 hp, that was a screamer. But, I said 48 SPL, which I think was a little different in carburation than a 50 hp OMC. I could be wrong about that.
