Johnson 150 fast strike 2 stroke.. help!!

I have little knowlegde about outboards so I will explain as best as I can. The starter I have on my boat has a gear on top and that’s all it goes into a cover that goes to another gear where the bendix is and I believe that’s what is causing my boat not to start. I was told I need to get in there to lube the bendix but the cover on the flywheel has a timing thing on it and I’m afraid to even mess with it.. but if I send to our local boat mechanic my boat will sit there for a month for something simple. Does anyone have experience with taking cover off and can I take pic of it and set it back on there the way it came off? Thanks
