Johnson 115 Charging Problems (VJ115tlats)

I have a '93 Johnson 115 that I'm having a charging issue with and I've been unable to resolve. Initially, voltage at battery was zero... no charging at all. Checked all wiring and found no problems. Replaced the Regulator/Rectifier with new CDI model and it came up to 12.8v at idle and 12.9v at WOT. Not great. Everything I've read said it should be 13.7v or above. A few more tests and I decided to throw a new CDI stator on it. No increase in voltage whatsoever.

So, I've thrown a bunch of money into new parts... with minor improvements. Anyone have any ideas of what I should check/replace next. Any input is appreciated.

Thats only a 10 amp system and thats at WOT. If your battery is fully charged when testing it will show low charging. Turn on a few accessories and see voltage stays the same or rises......

I let the battery drain quite a bit before testing (left lights on, etc). i also put more of a draw into the equation by turing every light/accessory on when the engine was running. Still couldn't get it to go over 13 volts.

A new stator and rectifier regulator means that you have a totally new charging system.----------------------So if problem persists it must be a wiring issue !!!!-----------Tachometer ( if equipped ) working ok ????

Tach works fine (it has the entire time). I've been through the wiring top to bottom and cannot find anything. Any good trouble shooting lists for the wiring harness floating around... just to ensure I didn't miss anything?

are you taking the voltage reading from the red wire off your voltage regulator? try switching your yellow stator wires around and see if you get a new reading.Your new CDI stator should have two solid stator wires and no yellow and grey striped stator wire .

what does the battery read before charging?then what does it read after the motor has been running for a few minutes?a fully charged battery should read approx 12.7v with no load....then when you start the engine it may read less than that for a few moments..remember at that point you are drawing good current from the charging system to replace starting power used and you are looking at voltage..as the current goes up on a low amperage rectifier only system the voltage will drop...then the voltage should slowly build til it exceeds the voltage it read before starting engine....if it goes to 13v or exceeds the original reading then you are doing some charging..letting the battery run down or placing a load on it will lower the reading..it sounds as if you are expecting it to increase....when you let the battery run down or place more load on it you will draw more current and drop the voltage... what is the reading after you are on the water and have run the boat at 3k rpm for 15 minutes or so?...what is the reading with a fully charged battery after it has run 5 minutes at 1k rpm at the dock or with the muffs?if these readings exceed the original reading with the battery just hooked up and the motor not running then the system is trying to charge and i would suspect problems elsewhere...either the battery or a voltage drop somewhere.....wired wrong maybe?
