Is my carb clean enough (BF20F)

Hi,

My sailing dingy came with a honda 2hp outboard that I'm trying to revive. The owner said the engine had been underwater so I decided to open up the carb and found the bowl had a good bit of pitting and serious build-up. I soaked it in carb cleaner but ended up having to sand the bowl down and scrape off the build-up. There are still areas where it looks like there is tarter build-up that I haven't cleaned. Before i put it back in I wanted to know if the group thinks this is clean enough and whether there are any issues with having such a heavily pitted bowl. post clean-up photos attached.

Thanks!
Ben

I personally would not use them. How much is a new carb? The smallest debris is all that's needed to make that motor not run.
You could always give it a go if you don't need it to be reliable.

How's the motor? Rotate by hand ok?
How long was it under water?

Thank you for the reply. I've been quoted about $100, which I'm happy to pay if it gets her running reliably. I just didn't want to be wasteful. I think the engine was underwater for an hour or so (fresh) and seems to rotate fine.

Well, the pitting in the bowl isn't a problem. But it is indicative of what you probably can't see in the passages. Beantown is right, all it takes is a small little "something" in there that will have you getting the paddle out to make it back to your boat.

On the other hand, if you put it on and it starts easy and runs for 20 minutes....it might just work from now on.

Good luck.

P.S. boats.net lists the carb (part # 16100-ZW6-G01) for $71.28.
You would have to pay shipping though.

Good luck

Do not just order the carburetor without talking to someone at boats.net. That carburetor is for 2006 and later models.

If you truly have a BF20F, it is the first 2 HP that Honda made and is water cooled. The carburetor part number has changed four times and I see that it is not available.

16100-ZV0-000 to 16100-ZV0-005 to 16100-ZV0-015 to 16100-ZV0-025 and to 16100-ZV0-325.

I do not know if the carb, that Jimmy listed, will fit.

You might see if there is anyone of the above on ebay or similar site on the internet.

One other thought....if you can not find a new one and/or are not confident in what you did....is to take the disassembled carb to any outboard dealer (does not have to be a Honda dealer) that has an ultrasonic cleaner and see if they will put it in their ultrasonic cleaner and blow out the passages afterwards. There are not that many passages in that little thing.

You might also be sure that you cleaned the "crud" off and just give the carb a try. It might just work. If it does not, be sure that you have spark and compression, then try one of the other options that I listed above.

Be sure to have that motor in a garbage can of water when you try to start it, so you do not damage the impeller. Never try to start this motor without having it in water.

Good luck!

Mike

Sorry, I was WAY OFF on that part number. I see that the one you need is obsolete.
Many thanks to hondadude for clearing that up.
It makes me wonder though about where you found one. Are you sure that one is the correct replacement?
You may be forced to use your old one aftr all.
Good luck.
