Installing a new drive shaft

I Bought a New Lower Unit for a 2006 evinrude e tec 225 hp. My ? is do I have to remove the lower drive shaft to install the retainer and roll pin or can I just tap it in place with a rubber mallet. I also can see a roll pin already in the lower drive shaft

If you have your old one out ,just install it in new unit and give it a tap to seat.

The retainer already should be in the new lower unit. The roll pin holds the retainer in.
