I have a distributor that have a coversion kit on it. with it being a electronic distributor now will i have to use that coil call FLAM THROWER 11?

The coil i have it did start the engine, but the coil became very hot and would not start the engine anymore, but when i put a test light on the + side of the coil it did come on. is my problem that i need a coil with more power.

Thank for any information any one can give me on this matter.

I suspect you've burned out your coil. Getting too hot suggests that you may need a coil with an internal resistor or wire in an external ballast resistor. Putting the test light on the +'ve side just means that you are still getting power to the coil.

Don't know if all vintages are the same, but I recall a red resistive wire to the coil which would indicate the need for a coil with an external resistance. If so, you should have less than 12 volts at the coil when running. What kind of conversion kit was it? If it's a Pertronics, you don't change the coil.

Bob and Woodie are right, and most high discharge coils do not like being attached laying down on the engine, most manufactures require you to mount them in the upright position, or void your warranty. If you are going to need a ballast resistor, and it sounds for sure that you will; you will need to fashion a fireproof mount for those puppies, because they can get Hot! I have an MSD blaster on my boat, and in order to satisfy the warranty it needed a matching ballast resistor, and mounted in an upright vertical position, off the engine preferably.

I hate those Flame Thrower coils.... you can read every page of literature ever published on them - no one can figure out whether they need a resistor or not... ask 10 retailers and youl get 5 saying yes, and 5 saying no.

flamethrow it overboard.

The coil before my Blaster was a flame thrower, and I did not use a resistor, because I was not told it needed one, and the instructions did not say one way or the other, just to check my wireing. So I mounted it where the old stock coil was, which was on top of the intake manifold, in the horizontal position. It lasted 10 hours, and burned up, leaving me in the middle of nowhere. I would not get another one.

The delco is fine, but some guys think the fancy hot coils give a little better edge. I have not noticed the boat being any faster, but it starts better, and seems to burn a bit less gas. I dunno, 'could be my imagination....
