Ignition Coil Wiring

I replaced the ignition coil on my Honda 15hp kicker and, like an idiot, I didn't mark the wires that connect to the ignition coil. Does anyone know which wire goes to which terminal? There is a black wire with a blue stripe and a solid black wire; on the ignition coil there is a black terminal and a blue terminal. I realize this should be in the service manual, but I don't have that right now. I asked for help on a FB group and someone suggested that it doesn't matter which wire goes where. That seems wrong to me, but is it?

Thanks
Nick

Hi,

Two guys here that I know likely have more knowledge of and information about your particular model would be HonDan
and bobmech.

I know just enough about CDI ignition to be dangerous. So, I'm not sure that "it doesn't matter" which way the coil wires are connected. But I think it actually does.

The capacitor in the CDI is charged with "half wave" current via a diode rectifier which means it is direct current.
The capacitor then discharges the stored energy into the coil windings to fire the coil.

Pretty much all 12volt automotive coils I've ever dealt with had a positive terminal and a negative terminal. And they were usually marked with little + and - raised indicators located near the terminals. You might want to look carefully at your coil for indicators like those.

If the coil is connected "backwards", I suspect that it will still work that way but don't know if it would be as efficient or run as cool as it should.

There's a reason why that terminal is blue. To indicate it connects to the black with blue stripe wire perhaps? I don't know.

Good luck.

If it helps, the serial number on this is BALJ-1402453. I thought the same as you, that the blue terminal and the black/blue wire would be a good fit. But on the old ignition coil, there is evidence of salt water corrosion on the blue terminal and the solid black wire. Which is making me pause. Hopefully HonDan or BobMech can chime in!

Yeah, they've both taught me a thing or two. You might try pm'ing them although I don't know how either of them feel about that.
Wish I knew more.
Good luck.

Well, as it turns out, your sending the frame number DID help!

I thought this was an ancient model but it looks to actually be a 2007 BF15D.

Looking at the wiring diagram for those, it looks like the FB group was right. Polaity doesn't really matter for connecting the ignition coil.

However, if you want to put it back to "factory", the black with blue stripe wire is positive from the Ignition control module (CDI) and connects to the top or highest terminal on the coil.

The black wire is ground and connects to the bottom or lowest terminal.

That's it!

Hope this helps.
