Identify Honda outboard BF15 or BF20

Hey guys,

I have a Honda outboard that I want to identify. Coincidentally I saw that a similar thread was made today, from this thread I learned that the inclusion of a fuel chamber means I have either a BF15 or BF20. I am unable to find the serial number were the manual tells me it should be (near the fuel filter). I've seen images online which suggest Honda has at one time used stickers for this purpose (?). Anyway, I'd like to determine whether I have a BF15 or BF20. The only marking I found which might be of use is on the carburator: 07A[A] RH08. Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks!

Honda uses "frame numbers" to identify the complete outboard assembly. The BF15D & BF20D frame number tags are riveted to the center of the mount frame just under and forward of the power head. Should be obvious unless intentionally removed. This is typically the case if the outboard was stolen at some point in it's existence. If the tag has been removed, you will only find the remnants of the rivets or the rivet holes.

Hopefully my photos upload. If not, I will try again.

Good luck.

Thanks for replying. I checked and there are indeed holes where the rivets used to be. The previous owner technically wasn't allowed to run the engine. He also replace the cover with one from a 10 horse engine, I guess he remove the tag as well. If I understand correctly the BF15 and BF20 are identical apart from the cam shaft and the carburator. Is there a way to check these differences (carburator jet size perhaps)?

Well, I don't know that the cam and carb are the only differences between the two but they are very similar for sure.

I can tell you the primary stock jet for a BF15D is #120 and the primary stock (sea level) jet for a BF20D is #125

Although, one of the optional jets for the 20hp is a #120 too so if anyone has re-jetted a 20 for altitude that could fool you into thinking it's a 15hp.

The cam will be stamped on the end but you have to remove it from the head to read the numbers.

I would think that the engine serial numbers might reveal which is what but I've never done that sort of research so I can't say it would be a sure fire method either. A call to Honda America might get you some reliable info.

Good luck.

This seems common, replacing the cover with a smaller HP number. That is what the previous owner of mine did. I have a BF20 with a 9.9 cover. Good luck figuring it out.
