Identify drive shaft

Help please. I bought an older Johnson 85 hp. 85esl75e.
During test run it started to overheat. Bought new water pump kit and thermostat. But when I removed the old impeller, I found the shaft key was a wedge style while the new kit key is a woodruff style. Parts manuals all show the OEM to be the woodruff style. So maybe someone changed the driveshaft at some point? I took a stab ond bought a wedge style impeller for a different year and assembled, but it didn't work. Hate to give up on the motor, it seems well built and easy to work on. Anyone know if a different year drive shaft with the wedge style key could have been put into this model?

One step at a time.-----Post pictures of shift linkages on the motor.---Or " does it shift to forward with an UP motion of the shift rod " ?-----Some one may have converted it to a newer lower unit.

shift arm moved down when in forward.

???----The shift rod is the rod that goes to the lower unit from the motor.----Does this rod move UP when motor is shifted to forward, yes or no ?

Sounds like a newer driveshaft has been fitted in an original hydraulic assist lower unit.-----Try an impeller and housing from say a 1985 model V-4.

Yes, that's not a problem. Original part. Just have to get the correct impeller. Last time, I found an impeller that matched in size and had the wedge key. It came with a lower o ring with instructions that it needs to be installed under the impeller. That one didn't work. Now I'm going to look for an impeller without an o ring. I'll let you know what happens.
