How to remove duoprop from Volvo Penta 280 ?

Hi all,

I need to remove my props from my Vovla Penta 280 sterndrive with duoprop so that I can replace the anode.

I've attached a photo of the prop.

I can remove the bolt in the end of it but I'm not sure how to remove the next part (the part with fins).

Looking online a lot of the time the 280 sterndrives have a "cone nut" on the end but it looks quite different to my photo (they
are often actual cone shaped parts).

Any advise would be great - thanks very much!

What engine type do you have, gas or diesel ?
Search online special tool,Volvo part number 885127 to see if it works… Believe you need to know if you have a A,B, CJ type drive.

Plus roughly see pages 23, 128 and 143 as it mentions a special prop tool,

The engine is a diesel TAMD30.

I do have that prop tool (885127) - It was very cheap even as a genuine volvo penta tool. I also have the prop tool 3855876 which is more like a big box spanner. I purchased both tools because I'm sure I'll need one, or both, tools.

I found a diagram online that shows a breakdown of the prop and the parts and it shows the part I'm looking at - the part I'm trying to work out how to remove is the visible part with the fins - in the diagram here it's part number 44.

BTW I'm pretty sure that the prop tool 885127 is needed to remove part number 42 in the diagram but I won't get to that until I've removed part number 44.

Found the prop nut in question...Looks like all you have to do is remove the center bolt and washer (45 and 46) and 44 oughts to just pull off with little effort and no turning as it's flat on the back side as suggested in the available photos of VP part number 852201.

That's the one!

Typical though - I've tried a couple of times and it doesn't seem to want to come off. Because the sterndrive and props are aluminium I've been slow to hit it much and there doesn't seem to be much space around it, and the prop surrounding it, to get any kind of puller on it. I'll give it a go again at the weekend but it's really great to know that I'm not meant to be trying to unscrew it.

Although... Now that you gave me the volvo penta part number I've searched on Google and found some photos (it's for sale on ebay) and it's like I can see a thread there - I'll upload copies of the ebay photos here.

It's amazing how many types of Volvo penta sterndrive derivatives there are which makes life harder (but I do like how easy it is to get all the parts even though it must be 40 years old!).

Hi,

Just an update - I got this off - It came off with a 24mm socket (I'm a bit surprised because this is just under 1" but I didn't have any big imperial sockets to try with me). It was tight but came off with a normal counter-clockwise thread.

Another update - I got part # 44 off with the special tool (885127) but there was no way I could do it without a cutoff 3 foot metal tube slid over the tool handle to get enough lever on it to undo it. Again this was a standard counter-clockwise thread (so actually both props are held on with a counter clockwise thread although the inner prop has a big washer with tabs that lock the part (#44) from turning so i'm guess it must be the counter rotating prop when going forward.
