how to install a temp guage?

After noticing how many little things in the cooling system can go wrong and cause a complete motor loss, I would really like to have a temp gauge, as of now I do not have a temp gauge or overheat alarm, I have heard mixed reviews on the temp gauge not even being accurate enough to justify having it, what are your thoughts and how would I go about getting a ready set that will work for my motor and where would the sender screw into my water jacket. I have a 1979 mercury v150,v6. Thanks.

I do not have a temp gauge or overheat alarm,
Did you test the alarm circuit? Ground the tan wire w/blue stripe at the engine, the alarm should sound. The alarm should have 12 vdc on one wire and the tan/blue striped wire on the other.

Is that the single wire coming out of the head? Going by color on this thing has not really been an option for me as for I'm color blind.

yes it is. ground the striped wire on the alarm horn...it will sound off if it is working and the other wire has 12 vdc on it.
