How to disconnect shift shaft on BF100

Hi guys, I need to disconnect the shift shaft on my BF1009(1982). I'm doing so to remove the gearbox for an impeller check/change. The Clymer manual just says to disconnect the shift shaft from the shift linkage by removing the locking pin. To me, it looks like I have no choice but to unbolt the the shift lever assembly to remove the the shift lever mechanism in order to remove the shift linkage connector from the upper end of the shift shaft. Any help? It seems fundamental on any outboard to diconnect the shiftshaft to remove the gearbox. The manual says to count the number of turns when removing the connector. I know manuals aren't perfect, but my Clymer manual is vague in this instruction. Any help? Thanks as always to all of you!!!! Gob Bless!

It is a tight squeeze but you should be able to shift the trans into forward then remove the cotter pin from the linkage pin. I use a small, powerful telescoping magnet to get control of the head of the pin and then wiggle it out of the shifter.

You can push it out with a long skinny screwdriver but stuff a rag or something in under it first to catch it. Then, stick that long skinny screwdriver (or anything that you can find that works) back where the pin came out and shift the trans to reverse.

You should then be able to unscrew the connector from the top of the shift shaft after moving the selector back to forward. Count the turns as it comes off so you can put it back the way it was. If you forget, you will have to play with it to get the motor to shift properly.


If you forget, the book says to screw the connector all the way down then back out 41/2 turns to get a "stock" adjustment. But, that may vary.

It is pretty tight in there so be patient. Your option of taking the shifter out will work too.
