How doI upgrade my older engine??

I didnt know where to Put this, but I would lije to know if its possible to upgrade my older 4cyl, 140 HP MOTOR for a more modern engine? How do I know if the bell housing fits? The bew eng would have to match up to the eng mounts.

Also, my lower unit has 120/140 stamped on it. Does this mean its rated for a 4cyl motor? Do they even make eng that fit in these older boats? If so, who do I call? I have a 1970 Winner (17ft) run-about. The eng in it now has a cracked block, so thats why i want to swap it out. Just curious if anyone has done this before, and how to go about it.

I called a boat repair shop, and they said to research the forums. He also said i could prob merge up to a 3.0 liter , but the concern is the bell housing and if it mounts up right.

What do u guys think?

Thanks

Larry

Most of the Winner's I've seen in that size are outboards - which gives you one option - convert it to an outboard. Beyond that, your best bet is to figure out exactly what motor you have in there now. Then you can find an upgrade or replacement that will fit. There should be an identification plate or stamp somewhere on it. Of course, your other option is to hull it to a boat repair facility and see if they can figure it out.

Ayuh,... A brand new 3.0l from Merc will bolt right in, using yer old flywheel cover...

The 140, IS the 3.0l motor...

There'll be a few Gotcha's, such as the coupler, 'n possibly abit of wiring...
