Honda tiller handle vibration noise

My 2005 20 HP tiller handle vibrates and makes a very loud annoying noise when running at trolling speed. Does any one know how to quiet this down. It happens at the speed I use for trolling for salmon and gets very tiresome after several hours of listening to it.

The tiller pivot bolt might be too loose. If you raise the tiller from the full down and horizontal position it should stay at any angle you leave it at.

Another thing I might check is the pivot friction plate. If your outboard steers VERY easily or sort of flops around when you release the helm, you should probably tighten up the friction bolt.

If it's neither of those things then you have to keep in mind that noise can "travel" or transmit from one place to another. If you can't find anything loose on the tiller that you can put pressure on and alter or quiet the noise, then you should look for looseness elsewhere.

These noises are aggravating and sometimes hard to find and eliminate. I feel your pain.

Thanks for the suggestions. I m pretty sure both the pivot friction plate and the tiller pivot bolt are OK. I believe the noise is coming from inside the tiller handle grip in the area of the mechanism that "locks" the throttle but thought some one may have had the same problem and could save me some time in fixing the problem.

If you can not solve your problem with what Jimmy is telling you, you can try tricking it.

Evidently, the motor is setting emitting a frequency at the rpms that you are running. That frequency has found something on the motor is in tune with it and is causing it to vibrate (like two tuning forks).

Since the speed of the boat is important to catching fish, you did not say that the noise went away at other speeds. If it does, try using a different pitch prop.

Post what pitch it is and the size of your boat. And if the 20 is just being used for a kicker.

Changing the pitch, will allow you to change the speed of the motor...with lower pitch, you increase rpms, with higher pitch, you lessen rpms. Changing the speed of the motor and the prop will change the frequency and the noise should go away.

Depending on what pitch you have now, you may not want to increase the pitch, so it does not bog the motor down.

You're probably spot on with the lock mechanism being the source of the noise. If so, you just need to dive in and check it out. There's nothing overly complicated about the tiller but you need to try and not force or break anything in there as getting parts might be a challenge for one of those.

Hi Mike,
The boat is a 26 foot Osprey Long Cabin. It is a heavy boat at about 10,000 pounds. The Honda 20 is used as a kicker. The prop is a 4 blade Honda prop and is marked 10X7.

Hopefully, following Jimmy's instructions on the handle will get you fixed up.

If you have no success and decide to try a prop change, I would not increase the pitch. I would reduce it to a 10 x 6 1/2 part number 58130-ZW9-B23ZA.
