Honda Cowling Adjustment

Is there an adjustment that can be made on the cowling of a 2005 BF 225 ? The front of the cowling seals down tight by the front latch, but in the rear the cowling "clicks" in, but doesnt really seal up tight (it wont ever fly off or lift off) but water certainly could enter and salt etc. I noticed it has some spring mechanism and was wondering if there is an adjustment to tighten this down?

Yes there is. Loosen the 6 mm hex nut on top of the bracket. The pointed end that locks into the base screws in and out to adjust.

Let's try this one. This weekend after checking the oil on my 150's, i have a latch that won't engage. It's the starboard rear, what appears to be the last in line for the cable. The cable pulls freely. I put a little PB Blaster on the mechanism, which is moving freely, it just doesn't move out enough to engage the pin?

Thanks,

Trace the cable back from the latch to the first adjustment screw, loosen the lock nut, and tighten the cable to lengthen the travel. If that doesn't do it, then trace the cable to the next adjustment screw and adjust that. You just need to play with it to get all the locking latches to open and close fully.

Thought I had mine where it needed to be. When i first got the motor it was very loose in the back of the cowling but clicked in up front. I adjusted it and now the whole cowling seals down, even when i pull up on it HOWEVER - the past two trips out on thr water i've noticed when i get the boat back home it is loose in the back AGAIN. So its popping out of place when out running the boat???

I took my mid section covers off yesterday as I'm going to paint them. I discovered that the cable running across the rear to the starboard latch is bad. The cable appears to move freely, but it hangs just enough to foul the latch. The casing is ruptured and there is just a hint of rust.

So you are saying it wont catch the latch in the rear? If so, sounds very similar to my problem. When you pull the latch in the very front, do all the cables move?

Yes, all the cables move, but when released, the starboard latch hangs just a bit, and doesn't move that last 1/8". I'll try to grab a pic this morning.

I think I might have the same problem. Picture would be great. I may mess with mine tonight after work.

I got away from the house this morning without gettting pictures. I'll get one up tonight. The good news is the replacement cable is about $13 from boats.net.

Here is the cable that runs behind the motor, obviously a bad spot:

Another shot of the offending cable, which is only $9.xx:

Here is the latch, it should be touching the metal block, about 1/8" short of fully engaging the pin on the cowl:

Thanks for the pics airslot. I went ahead and tackled mine today. I believe I have it where it needs to be.

I believe someone may have pulled the cowling off before I bought the engine and didnt pull it straight off. The starboard side cable was kinked and not letting the lock click in place (not letting the cowling stay sealed down. When it would pop loose, it would actually pop the other side loose, having only the front stay clicked in.

I tightened it all up, and it appears that cable is fine when put put where it belongs. I firmly have tried to make the cowling pop out of place, but cant make it happen. So it should be good to go now. You can visually see the locks doing what they should be doing now. No gap at all. Grabs onto that hook.
