I have a 9 hp Honda 4 stroke I am replacing the water pump on it. On inspection of the lower unit I noticed a rubber o-ring around the shift rod where it goes into the lower unit gear box that seems to be dry rotting and crumbling. I have looked at Hondas service manual and the parts breakdown for my BFP9.9d engine and I cannot found that replacement part or any procedure to replace it? Anybody know anything about this part? I am trying to add a picture of the area if I can get the @^*$#@()@ add attachment to work!:( Pic1aa.jpg

Hi,
The shift shaft seal is item 26 in the link below.

Replacement requires that the propshaft holder be removed and the retainer pins (items 32 in the link) be driven from the lower shift shaft. This allows you to remove the shaft from the gearcase to replace that seal.

It's a bit of a chore for sure.

There was a recent post on the Forum in which the owner did both the main shaft and shift shaft seals in his gearcase. If you can find that, he took pictures and gave a very good description of what he went through to get it done successfully.

Good luck.
