Honda BF50L 5 HP Fuel Pump

OutboardProblem

New member
The 5hp kicker stalls once underway on slow/low rpms. I believe it’s a fuel delivery issue. Cleaned carb, bowl, jets needle…. Cleaned fuel line, changed inline filter and checked and cleaned fuel pickup in portable tank. Nothing terrible or obvious was found. Run fresh rec gas non-ethanol too. Pump the bulb and it runs for 5 minutes and the rpm’s begin to drop if I squeeze the primer bulb it goes back to normal. Want th know what’s causing it. Could it be the fuel pump diaphragm? I examined it and its intact looks a little ballooned. However, it doesn’t just lay inside the housing but is somehow attached to the pump case and a shiny piston-like piece on the opposite side. Anyone out there knows what the process is to change it or do I buy a whole new pump? Thanks for your advice. Edwin

Hi,

They don't sell the individual parts for the old "rebuildable" pumps anymore. So you'll likely need to buy a new pump if that's what you think the problem is.
See link below:

But first, make certain that the hose isn't sucking in air, the fuel tank vent is open and clean and that the primer bulb check valve is good.

Also, make sure that the flow indicating arrow on the.bulb points upwards at least slightly.

Check that any quick release connectors don't have worn spots on the valve face and the push pin isn't worn down so that it can't fully open the valve or ball. Make sure they securely engage and latch properly.

Even a very small amount of restriction in the feed line could defeat the pump's suction power.

Good luck.

Thank you. Yes I did the vent cap, fuel line, primer bulb and check valve and quick connector exactly like you describe. Appreciate the link for the new pump and too bad a rebuild kit is not available. Take care and thx again.

One other thing that crosses my mind is that, even though I have no experience with that outboard, I believe the fuel pump is cam driven. Make sure you have a good look at the lobe when you remove the pump.
I wouldn't think there would be any excessive wear there but it's best to make sure there isn't.

Welcome to the forum. Please update with what you find and results.

I’ll look at that again. It is a cam drive for this fuel pump. That’s on the inside of the crankshaft chamber “shiny piston-like piece”. I’ve ordered the new pump. $100 when all it probably needs is the diaphragm but there could be a wear spot on the back piece or a lube. Thx again for your advice and know how.

Well, Honda spare parts disappointed me. There is no longer a fuel pump replacement for this motor. Does anyone have any idea on replacing the diaphragm instead of replacing the total fuel pump? Let me know if there’s a way to source a solution for this. Thanks.
