Honda BF5 coil problems

good afternoon!

Pulled my Honda 5HP out today. started and ran great but noticed the green oil pressure light was not on. checked oil, pulled sender and checked oil pressure and that was ok. checked 12v power from the coil "Part number 30500-zv1-003" and had no power from the small spade connector. Am I missing something simple or do I need to replace the coil? again engine runs great. that coil 30500-zv1-003 is not avalibile anymore is there and replacement part number?

I haven't seen a 5 hp in forever and have no service info on one.
I just wanted to point out though that any and all electrical devices must have a reliable ground. Therefore, verify the circuit integrity before assuming that a new part is needed.

It's probably going to involve pulling the flywheel to use an ohmmeter to check it out properly but you may end up rejoicing if it turns out you only need to knock off a bit of rust to restore continuity and power.

If you do find that the coil is defective, there were so many of these (you didn't mention what year) I can't imagine it would be impossible to find a good used one. But it could take some diligent searching.

Whoops! Just looked up the frame number and it seems to be pre-1997. Never seen one of those,
so, yeah, finding a replacement could be tough. Sorry.

Although, the core could probably be rewound if resistance value were known. That too, though, might be very difficult to do because of expense.

I bought a coil winding contraption looking to restore an old outboard but never used it because I located the part I needed. So I don't know how difficult it would be to DIY.

Wish I could offer more encouragement/info.

thanks for the fast reply. I did hook up the oil pressure circuit to a low amp 12v supply and ran motor and green light would go on when started and shut off when engine shut down. So I am kind of thinking coil. There are no good used out bord "junk yards" around me. is there and good online place to get good used parts?
 
Well, don't ignore my ground suggestion. If you're not familiar with electrical circuits or circuit testing, ask around among your friends. That coil  MUST have a good ground to make power come from that spade connector you mentioned.

That ground will likely be underneath the flywheel either through another wire or, more commonly, one of the bolts that secures the coil to the engine. Until that's investigated, I would not be very confident that the coil is bad.

Your experiment only proves that the lamp is good and that the pressure switch works. It does nothing to condemn or verify the coil.

What's more interesting is that it shows the ignition power (exciter) coil as being the same part. That's unusual but might work in your favor if it turns out that you need one. If that info is correct then that means that, if you did find a junk donor outboard then you would have twice the chance of getting a usable coil.
It also means that the online parts sellers like ebay are more likely to have some.

Just a thought.
 
I haven't had a chance and to take a look at the the grounds yet working a 24 hr shift. But i think your onto something with the grounds. I was thinking since the engine runs good, coil ohms out within spec and the engine shut off switch works good, and the shut off switch is tied into the same harness as oil pressure. its got to be bad wires/ground, light, or oil pressure switch

the link you set me is the optional charging system my engine must not have the option since i don't have any of that under the flywheel

i will keep you updated with what I find. thanks again for the all the help!
 
That's the spirit!!

Keep an eye out for a fuse buried under something or taped up in a harness too.

Just an update, after I ohm'ed out all harnesses checked grounds and load testing I found nothing wrong other then the primary winding on the coil was not not putting out voltage. Was able to find Tim's outboard in Hackensack MN (was awesome to work with) that had a used coil. Threw that in and everything works great!
