Honda bf2d oil leak

I noticed that oil was needed and when I add oil it all leaks out just below the oil cap. Space is limited so I can’t see what is in there that is leaking. Any ideas or what is involved to fix. Still starts and runs fine at this point

Hi,
I have no experience with this particular outboard and am not even sure if the parts page below is the one that applies to yours. Just trying to help.

Reference your frame (vin) number to get as close of a match as you can.

Looking at item 8 (part of the "boxed assembly" of 22)....

....if that looks familiar then I might focus on items 16, 17 and 18 as possibly needing replacement.

One other thing that might be a concern for this is if item 8 is made of plastic "like" material. Here's a "heads up" on that:

In the past, I have seen plastic oil fill fixtures that are similar, warp and distort from the heat. After much hassle of going in and replacing gaskets and seals, the leak would persist and an entire new assembly and seals were the only way to fix the problem. A REAL PAIN having to do the disassembly to get at it twice!

Sadly, that sort of distortion doesn't need to be much to cause a leak and, as a result, it is not immediately obvious that a new part is needed. So, look things over VERY carefully before deciding to just replace the orings.

Good news is that the parts all appear to be still available. A "luxury" that won't always be there for many models.

Good luck
