Honda BF225a Corrosion Question

I recently purchased a boat with a 2010 Honda BF225a with 350 hours. Yesterday, I was changing filters and noticed a lot of corrosion in the lower part of the motor. The motor runs great but this is concerning. What should be my course of action to make this motor reliable for years to come? Thanks!

Anodes should be replaced, those that are easily done. You can spray fluid Fluid Film on those rusting iron parts to stop the external rust, but looks to me you have anode issues.

I think you should also check all grounds on the boat as well as the outboard. Stray voltage can cause this sort of rust too, I saw this on the heavy chrome back bumper on a 1963 Pontiac, it also ate bumper braces and parts of the frame. I think it was stray voltage from a backup light. My 1999 Honda 130 has been used in salt water all its life, it has a lot less rust than your outboard.

NSDON could be correct. But it looks like saltwater has also gotten into the engine compartment - that's why most of the corrosion seems to be on the lower parts. Check the rubber seal all around the engine cover. Here on out, make sure that the cover is locked down tight on its base. Sometimes, it's easy to have the cover on, but not completely cocked down. You may need to adjust the locking pins on the engine cover.

You can use a Dremel with a wire brush head to clean up a lot of that corrosion. Then spray down everything with CRC 6-58.

Thanks! Y’all are very helpful! I found a broken bolt on the lower engine cover and the cover doesn’t completely seal together. I’ll replace the bolt, change the anodes and treat the rusty parts

They do get rust on the engine, it looks worse than it is. When I replaced the power head on a 04' 225 hp I wire brushed all the rusty nuts, bolts and brackets etc. I treated everything with OSPHO rust converter and painted with Honda gray engine paint. I spray the engine with Bosheild T-9 every 6 months with great results, I know others spray with Corrosion X and silicon spray also with great results.
