Honda BF225 problems

25.5 or 12.5x21 something, its a p21 prop, and the unused one is a broken p19 prop, something is fishy here, im gonna look at the receipt for the engine, i got that when i got the boat
 
I think others would agree that you should be running <19 pitch. You're boat is bigger and, probably, heavier than mine and a 14.5 x 17 seems good. I think C-hawk Man is running a 15.
If it's 12.5" diameter it's also too narrow.

This MAY be holding your engine back. I would strongly suggest contacting Ken at Propgods.com - he is an acknowledged guru when it comes to props.
 
I doubt it is holding it back, because it was delivered with the prop and the 19p was bought at 2012... But anyhow, a diagnostic and a look at the shop will be the next option. and the 19p is missing the internal rubber and parts.
 
I forgot what you have that 225 mounted on, but generally you definitely want to be well under a 19 pitch. I'm running a 14.5d X 15.0p prop on my C-Hawk 25 DLX which has a modified V, with a 9'6" beam and is in the 5500 lb to 6000 lb range, depending on how much fuel I'm carrying.

I'm not sure how that ^ makes it OK, but running a 21 on my engine stopped it going above 5200rpm - so it definitely WAS holding it back.

I'm not saying it's 100% the cause of your problems but I'm pretty sure it's not helping. Sounds like it used to run a 19 which broke so they chucked anything they could get heir hands on.... which was a 21. A 15 would give you somewhere in the region of an extra 800-1000rpm on a healthy engine.

But holding back 2500-3000rpm? That seems odd even for a bigger prop, i would understand if it was a 30" xD
My boat is a Gulf Craft Ambassador 25 Daycruiser, it's 3000 lb and can load 2000, so max load should be 5000lb, but now it got a 20l tank that i use to test, the main 300l tank is empty, but i got a few tools and stuff onboard.
Stats for the boat Main Particulars:
L.O.A 25ft 3 inc
Beam 8ft 3 inc
Draft 16 1/2 inc
B.W.L 6ft 5 inc
L.W.L 20ft 11inc
Fuel 80 US Gal. (300liter)
Capacity 2000lb

OK, what boat are you running? Length, beam, weight, hull type?

Wide open throttle (WOT) on these engines is 6000 rpm +/- 300. The ECU has a governor to keep it from over-revving.
 
OK. Metal-Chicken and I are on the same page. Now that we are getting down to reality, it looks like one of your initial issues was that you could only get 3500 rpm. If you were running a 21" prop, that's likely the reason.

That's a relatively light boat with a deep V hull and narrow beam. But still, the prop diameter should be in the range of 15" - 16" and the pitch should be no more than 17". I would guess that the best combination would be a 15 X 15 or right around there. If that puts you over 6000 rpm, then inch up the diameter to, say 15.5.

Here in the states, you can find some good Honda props on eBay for a very reasonable price. Just make sure you can return it if it doesn't work out.

Yes. somewhat. I took the boat to the shop, and he did some diagnostics and testing, everything responded normally and deleted faults i provoked to test if parts were working, so he did a ECU reset, had everything tested step by step, and could not find anything wrong with fuel pressure and ignition. So he sent me home, then i had a long interesting call with the guy that bought the engine, clearly telling me that this thing SHOULD have gained atleast 39knots with the 21" prop, but he got the 19" prop and gained 45knots. So i'm gonna put that on and test it. I need a new nut first, as they did put a merc nut on. and the threads was not right and it broke. Waiting for the new one now, ALSO he said the boat MUST be clean under, a few barnacles WILL take 5-10knots away since this hull run mostly through the water and not the 10% in water like a hydrolift or something. IF this works, then ive basically saved the engine and have been giving it a good service. the boat was OVERGROWN when i got it and there was even barnacle inside the prop exhaust house...... and almost out of sink. I will post the results when I get the nut and launch it. AGAIN :O
 
OK, so dealer reckons that the engine is fine - spark plug threads OK also?

You never mentioned that the hull was covered in weed! Yes this will create a large amount of drag and, combined with the wrong prop, could be the reason for your issue.

I still think a 19" prop is wrong. My 21' boat is great now with a 17" prop and, as your boat is a bit longer, I think you should be trying a 15"

Glad to hear the engine seems to be OK - get that hull cleaned!

Of course this was tested without resistance, i never mentioned the hull because its not bad at all, a few barnacles at the rear and thats been washed away about 3 months ago, i also had the boat on a scale and its 1400kg with engine , maybe 3k lbs, around that, he said the threads was dirty so you lost the feeling when you had the last turns to get the plug in, fixed after some cleaning.
 
OK, well if the engine is OK and the hull is clean then that just leaves the prop. Your boat weighs roughly the same as mine (but is a bit longer so more drag), so definitely a 17" or lower.
Just be aware that running a prop with too much pitch can be damaging to the engine as it's lugging all the time.
 
I have a honda 225 BF 2006 the battery was dead so I jump it, motor ran about 3 minutes and then turn off. now I have no key switch lights nor will it crank.i see there are fuses on key switch and motor, the ones I can see are all good, but I can't find the one 20 amp on electrical box. can anyone help ?
