Hi Everyone,

Just looking on for the best place to start. The engine runs well when at higher RPM's but will begin to idle rough under 2000 RPM eventually stall. Seems to be worse after running for a bit (warm engine). Applying the choke usually picks it up and prevents a stall.

Fuel is new - 87 octane. The engine has been run quite a bit this summer (3 months), but the idle problem is getting progressively worse.

Thanks for your help.

Your low speed/idle circuit is most likely gooed up. When you pull the choke, you are actually increasing the fuel going to the carburetor (it is not really choking). So it acts as your idle circuit as you keep it pulled out. You will have to remove the carburetor, disassemble and clean all of the passages. These carbs have a lot of hidden passages and most people take several cleaning before they get it right. There are a number of posts on this forum (most for BF8D or BF9.9D which have the save type of carburetor)....so the procedures are the same for all of them. Some of the posts are quite detailed. jgmo (Jimmy) has posted several great explanations.

Hopefully, he will jump in and direct you to one.

Thanks Mike. Currently mid boating season and thinking that a replacement carb might be in order (or at least keep the dirty one as a spare). Any thoughts on buying from http://www.boats.net? They have a replacement carb assy for under $200. I am thinking that it would be much similar to replace the unit completely.

Hi,
Your idea of just buying a new carb and getting on with your season sounds reasonable to me. That way, you can repair the old one at your leisure. But, do this first: if you're fuel system has a black, rubber "fuel chamber" attached to the engine oil dipstick tube, take it off and shake it dry. Then replace it and see if the problem persists. If not, you're all set. If she still gives you problems or if you don't even have one of these chambers, go ahead and order your new carb and get on with your season.
Good luck,
Jimmy d.
