Honda BF20A, BF25A. BF30A trim/tilt

Hello and greetings from Finland!
I have Honda BF20A 3 cylinder 2001 year without power trim/tilt. (Same engine than BF25A and BF30A?) and I have hard time finding power trim/tilt system for it.
So my question is that will Yamaha power trim/tilt fit to Honda, since they look kind of similar.
Or will any other brand trim/tilt system fit to my engine.

Hello joose 146!
Greetings back to you from America!
Welcome to the forum!

I am by no means an expert on the subject but I do own a 2006 BF20D with electric start, auto carb and power trim-tilt. As a multi boat and outboard owner I can say that the BF20D is one of my favorite outboards.

I have worked on many of the smaller models of Honda outboards for many years and, to my knowledge, there was no 20hp models available/offered in the American market from 1997 through 2002. There were 20hp models sold in America prior to 1997 but those were single cylinder engines with no power trim option. I have never seen one of those in person.

In 2003, the BF20D was introduced and has been available since then. They are 2 cylinder, single carburetor engines with options for electric start and power trim-tilt.

Since you say that there is a 20hp model with 3 cylinders, I can only guess that they may have been unique to the European and/or Japanese markets.

That is, basically, the extent of what I know and I'm sorry but I can't answer your question about the Yamaha trim being a possible fit.

Again though, welcome and I hope someone else here may be able to provide you some assistance.

Cheers!

Yes BF20A (3 cylinder) is only for European and Japanese markets but it's the same engine as BF25A/BF30A (3 cylinder) except there is small difference in carburetors which limit the power from 25hp to 20hp.
And yes you are correct in 2003 Honda introduced BF20D 2 cylinder version which discontinued European BF20A 3 cylinder version.

Well, not sure this would help you or not but they did start offering tilt/trim for the BF25D in 2004. See item 10 in the link below

You would likely get comparable or better pricing and undoubtedly cheaper/faster shipping from yumbo-jp.com if you ordered from them.

Good luck.

So BF25D trim/tilt should fit for BF25A?

I don't know if the 25 D trim will work on the 25 A. I just pointed it out since you said that you were looking for something adapt. I probably shouldn't have even mentioned it because my guess is that it could NOT be made to work.
Sorry.

I have no experience doing what you propose but I wanted to comment about trying something like this.

While I have no doubt that it could be done, I think that you may encounter some obstacles that might be hard to overcome.

Not trying to rain on the idea or be "Capt'n Obvious". Just some thoughts on a project like this.

While these outboards look very similar, there's several differences.

Not the least of which is that the 2000 year model didn't come with power trim/tilt.

If you only have the trim unit from the '04 and want to put it on the 2000 model, I think it will be very difficult and require some creative fabrication on your part. Your skill set and tools might make a big difference.

If you have the ENTIRE 2004 outboard and can scavenge parts from it, then the possibility of success goes way up IMO.

For instance: You will likely need to replace the 2000 model's stern clamp with the one from the '04 to have the trim module fit properly and leave it tilting and working correctly.

Beyond that, I couldn't even tell if the 2000 swivel case will link in with those components so you'll want to study that carefully as that may need to be swapped over too.

Also there's lots of items for BOTH of these outboards that are no longer available new so, if you need to replace something, that might be an issue for you.

Just some thoughts on what you could encounter should you choose to try.

Good luck.
