Hi all i have a Honda bf 20hp bought new in 2008 last Saturday had an accident with my rib i hit the gear case 2 times while i was running about 20 knots and the motor was running at about
5000rpm and it submerged swallowed water from carburettor and idle port out board engine won’t turn while gear box is free but it squeeze when i turn the propeller what do you think is it worth it repair it or no ? and what do you think there is to be replaced if it will be repaired ? Thanks Jason

What does "but it squeeze when I turn the propeller" mean? I don't understand that phrase. If you didn't pull the spark plugs and try to force the water out, then it is probably hydro-locked.

You need to pull the spark plugs, remove the kill switch key and turn the engine over. Then, spray WD-40 in the spark plug holes and, WITH THE PLUGS STILL OUT, turn the engine some more and then change the oil and filter.

Under the cowl, spray the entire engine with WD-40. Then, unplug each electrical connector and spray with either WD-40 or contact cleaner.

If it doesn't turn over easily with the spark plugs removed, you most likely have damaged a rod or valve and the engine will need to be repaired. Still worth it on an engine this new but it will be expensive.

The squeezing noise is when i turn the propeller with hands clockwise it makes a noise it may be caused by the hit with the rock and may be the shaft is damaged and i asked if it is worth it repair it or not as i want to know what i have to say to the insurance company and do you think that electronic parts have to be replaced too? Thanks Jason

See if you can come up with a word other than squeeze to describe the noise. Squeeze just isn't computing in my little brain. Try this though:

Pull the emergency stop clip so that you are safe and put the motor in forward gear. Now try and turn the prop. If you can turn it at all, the hub is damaged and you need, at the very least, a new prop. I wouldn't buy one though until you know that the engine will run reliably.

And, yes, you may very well need some new electrical parts. Especially if you dunked it in salt water. They don't take kindly to being dunked in salt water. But, if you soak everything in WD-40 and then dry it all out, that should help mitigate any damage. WD-40 is a very effective product for displacing water away from most surfaces it contacts. Use it liberally as it will not damage anything under the hood.

I have seen outboard motor vertical shafts snap after a heavy impact such as you describe but never on a Honda...yet.

sorry squeaky is the correct word and yes it has dunked it in salt water .
If the propeller shaft is damaged could it be to make any noise ?

Anything is possible after a hit like that. I would be more concerned with the power head at this point though. If the engine is toast then it really doesn't matter what the prop shaft is doing.

Today after the servior inspected the outboard i tried to start it i removed the plugs and replaced them and tried to start it and after a lot of cranking it started but it won’t idle and misfire o lot and it was making odour of rubber burning then i took it to the local agent where they will see if it worth it repair it or no

Re: Honda bf20 hp submerged urgent help needed

Hi i need urgent help i need to know if there is somewhere written that when an outboard 4stroke like my Honda bf 20hp has been submerged
What is the procedure to take and witch parts have to be checked and replaced and what electric parts have to be replaced as my prehistoric marine servior that i don’t think he knows what it is a modern outboard does not want to replace any electric part but gust make it run again. Thanks Jason

If it swallowed salt water and has sat for a number of days you have a problem.----------------------It should have been flushed with plenty of fresh water.-------------------Oil changed a couple of times , it must be running as soon as possible before " galvanic corrosion " takes place.--------------If it was running fast and swallowed water it may have internal damage as well.---------Electric starter ( if equipped ) will have to be taken apart and cleaned. All electrical connections must now be cleaned.---------------------You can not sit around hoping and wishing for magic with a submerged outboard. Quick action is required.-------------
