Honda BF20 (2003) problem after service

My Honda BF20 is not working propaly after service by myself.
I Replaced the impeller and gasket, gear oil, engine oil + filter and sparkpluggs.
After the service the engine seams to be cooling but after about 5min in low speed aprox 3mph(test drive) the engine just dies, it worked god until it died. If I start the engine again the same thing happens again after about 1 min. After repiting this 5-6 times the engine goes even worse, feals like its running on only one cylinder, but if i remove one spark plug wire it goes even worse.
What might have gone wrong during my service? I have tried puting The Old sparkpluggs back but it dosent help.
The engine is putting out test water(dont know the word) but not more then after the impeller swap. mabye even less.
Yesterday before the service all was working perfect, so the thing I did was regular maintenence.
Pleas help, I need to go fishing :)

is the engine oil level is correct ? after start the engine oil light should be on always (green light )
open the top cover, start the engine run little while and see whether you can touch the engine, for make sure it is not over heating,

correct spark plugs and good tight them,

nothing else could gone wrong, did you touch the fuel system ?so if it was working fine before now it can be some cooling issue, make sure you used correct parts for water pump and install it correctly.

I think you may be overheating and the temperature sensor is shutting down the engine.

You may want to recheck your impeller installation. You said that you changed the impeller and gasket. The gasket that comes with the impeller kit goes under the metal plate. There is an o ring on the housing that seals the housing against the metal plate. If you installed the gasket on top of the plate, the impeller first has to tear through the gasket to be against the plate. It will eat up the gasket and get things somewhat plugged up. As you said, the telltale was not as strong as it was before you made the change. Notice #6 gasket goes under the #5 plate.

If this is the case, you are not the only one who has done it. I see this a lot.

If you have not removed the plate, you do not need the gasket. Clean out the pieces, pull the thermostat and backflush with a hose from the thermostat hole to get any smaller pieces out that may be clogging the passages. Make sure that the o ring #28 is still in the housing. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/H...SHTA/WATER PUMP VERTICAL SHAFT (1)/parts.html

Thnx for all replys.
I replaced the Oil according to the manual, 1liter and its looks correct on the stick were I check the oil level. I did not touch the fuel system.

I haven’t checked for water in the fuel but the Honda was working good on the same fuel a few days back, so I do not think this is the problem.

Hondadude: I think you are right, this is my concern to. I can feel the test water coming out but It seems to be less than before. And if I feel the water with my hand I can touch the water but almost not. If I remember correct I think the water is warmer than before the service.
Is there any way to check if the engine is overheating?
I removed the plate you are referring to when replacing the impeller, but I’m quite sure I installed it the same way as you describe. I will check this installation again and also clean the installation. I will also back flush like you describe, I didn’t flush the system since no part of the impeller was missing.

When I installed the lower end of the engine, I was putting part 10 in your picture on the plastic impeller house 4. And this seems to go on lower end of 9. But it’s not possible to check that this part fits ok when mounting the things together.
I will do this again and hope I find the problem; I will get back in any case.
Many thanks for you guys taking the time and helping.

You have to check the temperature at the thermostat area. The thermostat should be open at 70c or 158 F.

Also be sure that you put in the key, part # 24 between the impeller and the shaft.

Here is a step by step instruction for a 9.9, which should be pretty much the same as the 20.

The water coming from the bypass "pee hole" should never be hot. It should never get more than "luke warm" and you should be able to comfortably hold your hand in it indefinitely. Your description of how it feels on your skin is enough proof for me to say the engine is overheating and you need to go back and check your waterpump installation.
Good luck.

Many Thnx for the help and the repair gudie(Hondadude), I did everything again with the cooling and now it works perfekt. I think the problem was the impeller, I think I turned it the wrong direction = not counterclockwise. Many thnx for the help :)

Glad things worked out. Thanks for the report.

Now you are qualified to answer any question on the BF20 water pump. :)
