Honda bf15a rebuild

I have acquired a project, a pre 1988 15 hp in need of a rebuild.
Hard to start etc, turns out it has low compression in both cylinders 90 & 95 psi.
So far I have pulled the cyl head and inspected the cyl bores, they appear to be pitted, may have been stored with moisture in the cylinders at some time.
Before I go any farther, providing the cyl bores will clean up within specs, can I hone and install new piston rings?
What is the cylinder composition nickasil or? And can it be honed successfully?
It doesn't appear that oversized pistons are available?

I don't believe this engine was ever been apart, what other service parts would likely need to be replaced?

Have to ask.----Was throttle open when compression testing ?------These motors run with very little valve clearance.----Often with wear you end up with valves that are not quite closing and burning the exhaust valves.----I can not do the inspection for you.----I would look at the valves before any other wrenching is done.

Yes throttle plate was open. When I injected some engine oil into the cylinder the compression reading jump from 90 psi to 150 pdi

I don't think Honda has ever provided for oversize cylinder bores on any of the twin engines. So, if you have to take it outside of the wear limits to clean it up you'll likely need a replacement block.

The good news is that there are still plenty of these hanging around I'm sure.
The bad news is most of them are probably pretty hard to find.

www.boats.net lists all parts still available for these from Honda at a much better price.

Good luck with your project
