Honda BF150 2009 on a Honda 2000 controller...will it work?

I bought a 2009 Honda BF150a for my 25 year old boat that has a 2000 Honda controller. The 15-pin connector connects, but the old one had a 3-pin (I assume for the temp, oil, etc), New one has a 6-pin connector. When I jump the 3 old wires to the matching new wires, nothing happens. QUESTION: Is the 2000 analog controller just not going to work with a 2009 engine? What will I need to replace? Controller, analog tach, and idiot lights for oil/temp? Thanks!

You can run the motor on the old setup but the the warning light wiring is different but can be modified to by splicing your old two light warning light panel into the corresponding colours in the six pin harness.

Thanks--that's what I'd hoped. BTW--I did push the 'old' 3 wires into the corresponding 'new' 6-pin connector. Nothing happened. No solenoid clicks, nothing. No voltage to the 6-pin. Lights on the controller don't come on. I am getting 12v to the engine. Must be missing power to the controller?

What motor came off? The main engine harness hasn't changed, only the warning light harness. You must have another issue

Hi--the old motor is a Honda 130 (BZBE from 1999), the 'new' is Honda BF150a (BAPJ from 2009). Yes, the main engine harness clicked right in place. Only the 3-wire old warning lite harness isn't matching up to the 6-wire new (and I jumped those to test). And that presumably wouldn't be preventing the trim, or the control lights from turning on. Any ideas? (I've got a service manual, so may have to trace wires this weekend). Thx.

I pulled a 130 off a 2003 Triumph and installed 2009 BF150. need to get the 150 wiring harness and key switch, it was easy on a triumph because deck plates unbolt and center console folds in half made it easy remove old harness and key switch and install the 150 harness. The shifter controller and cables worked just needed to replace the linkage ends that thread on engine side of the throttle and shifter cable as the connections are different than 130. the connection for tilt rim was same for both harness so that was plug and play. You can find used 150 wiring harness on ebay and key swiches with the MIL lights and not expensive new.

Thanks...Figured it out today: You CAN use an older 2000 Honda controller with a 2009 Honda BF150. The differences are minor: 1) The 2009 engine has a separate (smaller) positive battery cable running to the main relays. This 3rd battery cable is apparently because taking power from the starter lug can cause an unwanted voltage drop when starting or tilting. Relays don't like that. And 2) The 2009 150hp added 3 sensors like fuel etc that the 2000 130hp didn't have. So either get a 6-pin male connector or just cut and splice the wires (colors are the same). 3) Yes, you need to swap out the brass male ends of the control throttle/shift for plastic female ones. My local shop just gave me a couple.
