Honda BF130a Maintenance

salt attack

New member
Hi, I'm from 'down under' (the coalition of the willing) and brand new to this great forum. I need to service my twin Honda bf130 outboards on my Sea Jay Ocean Legend 7.25m alloy fishing boat and there is no information in the owners manual (I bought it a few weeks ago) on how to change the gear case oil? Can someone help? Also, from where can I download a good pdf shop repair manual for these motors?

Check page 98 of this older owner's manual. http://marine.honda.com/pdf/manuals/31ZW5600.pdf

I do not know of any good downloaded manuals. helminc.com is the source for official Honda Manuals.

Hi Mike,
Thank you for the copy of the owners manual you went to a lot of trouble I appreciate it. I may purchase a helminc manual its just that the price is a sting! Just a query. I greased the Swivel Case with steering shaft and noticed tha (a) water was pushed out and (b) the grease escaped from the bottom of the case and did not exit from the top of the shaft. Is this normal? If not, how can I ensure that the whole shaft has sufficient grease?

I do not know for sure. At least you got as much water out as you could.

Maybe someone else may have a more credible answer. (It would not be hard).

I used to have the problem on my old Johnson SeaPro. I'd turn the engine back and forth several times, then punch in some more grease and hope for the best. It seemed to work fine.

The grease at the top often gets dry and hardens, so you might take a small pick or a hard piece of thin flexible vinyl and try to open up the area where the shaft fits down in the casing then try to force in some more grease.

Hi Mike,
I checked with prominent Honda service mechanic and apparently it is a common problem with no solution - just have to hope that it works its way to the top of the shaft!?
