Honda BF 45

Hi,

I see no one has responded to you so I will at least say welcome. I have no experience with this outboard but since it is the carbs you are asking about, they are fairly generic and we might be able to communicate on that level.

There are some archived posts on 1993 BF 45A carb cleaning and adjustment that you might want to take a look at. Here's a link to one of those threads:

As far as synchronizing the carburetors, it is fairly involved and requires a set of vacuum calibration gauges and an accurate tachometer that registers in 50 or less rpm to do the job properly. Do you have those?

I advise you that there are some things that should be checked and/or adjusted PRIOR to attempting synchronization or you will essentially be wasting your time fiddling with the gauges and carbs trying to smooth out a rough idling or poorly performing engine. This includes, of course, that the fuel is fresh and uncontaminated...the pump is delivering adequate volume and pressure...the carbs are cleaned and in optimum condition...the engine's valves are properly adjusted...the engine's valve timing is properly set. Are you comfortable in dealing with all of that or do you KNOW that those items and conditions have been addressed?

The complete procedure for performing the sync is contained in the HONDA MARINE CARBURETION MANUAL available from American Honda Motor Co., Inc. for around $40 dollars plus shipping on eBAY. Here's that link:

You may find it for less elsewhere but that was the quickest link I could come up with at the moment.

If you prefer to continue a discussion here I am more than willing but please respond with answers to MY questions as I have pretty much burned out on typing endless prose and getting little to no feedback from the other end.

However you decide to approach maintaining your equipment I wish you fair winds and good luck.

Thank you for the response and I will start by checking the timing and valves. I am comfortable working on Outboard motors and have rebuilt the carbs on the boat when I purchased it. I am a import car mechanic and have the Solac manual to give detail explanations.

Entirely your choice as tohow you source the needed documentation. Personally, I prefer the dedicated Honda shop manuals available through Helminc.com. Seloc, Haynes and Clymer manuals are MUCH less expensive but are notorious for being vague and containing "misleading" and inaccurate information. Do be cautious.

You gotta have carb sync tool if you want to do it right.
i've been working on these honda carb marine engine for 10 years.
I dont think i can't do it without special tool. When 3 carbs or 4 carbs are sych right. It idles alot better than efi motor.
