Bf225 with 480 hours in great shape working flawlessly. Started starboard engine last weekend and the tachometer showed it was about 1200 rpm at idle. Normally about 800 at idle. Took her out and oil, volts, water all checked fine. Engine did not sound like it was revving any higher. Checked motor again yesterday and tach still at 1200 at idle. It does not appear the motor is actually running at any higher rpm than the port engine or higher than normal. Wondering if these techs can go bad or out of sync etc. looking for any advice. Thanks in advance.

It is possible that the tachometer is stuck at 1200 and will not go any lower. To check....turn your key switch to on....the tachometer should go to zero.

If it goes to zero. Turn key to off.

On the back of the tachometer is normally a small switch with a screw slot in it. Note where it is set....then move the switch back and forth...hopefully cleaning off contacts that may be dirty. Put it back to the original setting and see what happens.

To answer your last question....tachs can go bad. If it is a Faria, you can send it back for a small fee and get it repaired. If it is another brand, you just have to buy a new one.

Mike - Does Faria make the Honda gauges? And if so, will they do the repairs like they will on their own gauges?

Thanks gents. Headed to boat soon and will look it over. Also going to switch the gauges and make sure it's the gauge, vice the engine...hopefully it's the gauge. Will let you know. Thanks, Kevin.

Bingo....rotated setting switch on back of tach, started up and all is normal. Thanks for the advice!

kslerette, good deal. Sometimes things are simple.

Chawk,

The Honda gauges that Faria makes are just standard Faria gauges with Honda logo. They will repair them also. There is a form on the Faria website that needs to be filled out and emailed. You pay up front via credit card. They have a fixed price for most of the gauges. That makes it easy to decide whether to repair or just buy new. Many gauges in various new boats are designed with special bezels etc for that boat manufacturer. That is the time to get them repaired....you can not buy them new except through the particular boat dealer...which tends to get expensive and some may be discontinued.

Faria is not the only manufacturer that makes gauges with Honda logo....Teleflex(VeeThree) also makes them. Beede used to but were recently discontinued.

Faria is the only one that does repairs.
