Honda BF 225 Overheating

I have a 2019 Raider 220 Pro fisherman that I just purchased from marketplace from a lady who's dad passed away. I don't know much more about the history but it was used on the ocean and could tell is was kept there docked in the water for a couple months I would assume. Overall the boat is in really good shape with only 230 hours normal wear but seems to be well cared for inside still smells new.

Before taking the boat out I wanted to do a little maintenance for peace of mind. So what I have done so far is I ran it with the fake lake hooked up for about 5- 8 mins just fine with decent Tell Tale and then shut it off to change the engine oil. No alarms nor overheated noted at this time. The oil was normal and clean but about a half a quart low. Proceeded to change the engine oil and filter as well as the transmission oil, I also installed a new OEM impeller kit for peace of mind (old one looked fine) when I removed it and made sure of proper install of impeller was right on the new one. I ran it after the oil change and new impeller using the lake again and noticed no tell tale at and when first started it revs out high at 2000 rpms all and After about 2 min the engine overheats and I get a solid beep with (Eng Warning level 1) (Eng Over Temp) (Eng Power Reduction) on dash. I do some research and then tried a large barrel to use instead of fake lake still and it overheats again with no Telltale. My next plan was to change the Thermostats so I installed new OEM T-Stats the old ones looked normal very minor build up still changed out. Ran it again and this time I get a very weak intermittent telltale if I throttle up but then telltale weakens and still overheats. Next I dropped the lower and hooked pond pump up and flushed for 24hrs with salt away, I also removed T stats for flush. After the salt away flush was done I flushed again for 2 hours with dish soap and vinegar just to be sure. Then followed by fresh water flush for a while. After all that I ran engine again using large barrel engines starts and still idles at 2000rpm I then throttle up and it drops to 1000 RPMS the temp slowly climbs to 155-160 degrees no tell tale at first takes about a min to start and its really weak then stops, then engine alarms sets off with same solid beep and (Eng Warning level 1) (Eng Over Temp) (Eng Power Reduction) on dash like it has been. Do more research and checked the poppet valves both looked fine and in good working order exercised and reinstalled. I start the engine to test and it still revs out to 2000RPM for 30 sec then drops to 1k this time it runs longer than before and I have a solid telltale within 10 secs but still overheats and I get the same alarms again.

Your block temp is fine, in normal use it will get up to 210deg F. To avoid guesswork I suggest the use of disgnostics to see which temp sensor is causing the overheat alert in order to narrow things down. It's more than likely one of the exhaust maniflold. You can check the flow through the rubber elbow drains at the bottom of each manifold, it's the 19mm elbow directing water into the mountcase, they can get blocked with sand or salt. The manifolds themselves could be blocked too. An indication of this is they get very hot very quickly after start up, if they are okay you should be able to comfortably hold your hand on them all the time.Hope this helps

Yes you’re right the manifolds are extremely hot to the touch within a min or 2. Im going to check the elbow this morning. Thanks for your response.

So took it to the water today for a test. Started it in the water and no Telltale after 30 seconds plus with no tail I rev the engine and it begins weak off and on. Couple more revs and its comes out steady. Run at an idle and gets up 160 and I get overheat temp alarms. Shut it off and use the kicker to get me our past the 5 mph zone and open the 225 up and run it down the river with no alarm and the temp climbs to 190ish and holds just fine with mo alarm. I run it at 2500 rpm or so for a good mile or two with no issues. I slow back don to the 5 MPH zone and I get an instant alarm. Turn off and clear the alerts and throttle back up to and get underway with no issue. Idle back down and get an the alarm again. Also noticed while running at an idle an excessive amount of heavy bubbles coming from the lower.

have you run it with the engine hood off and looked at the base of the motor there is a water coolant line on left side of the vst that I have seen come off causing the no tell tale flow and overheating.

Ok. I read all that and I wanna know...what was the answer? Calitoyz?
Thanks,
Justin Wade
Im wanting to hear the final result myself. I suspect that when the water pump was replaced, the fins were turned the wrong way, effectivley pushing water the wrong way. It would be nice to know for sure though =)
