Hi all,
I'm stumped. I have a 9.9 electric start. I'm able to start the motor but it soon after dies. When I throttle up it sometimes dies, I can get it to stay running for a couple of seconds but then boggs down and dies. I have taken the carburetor off and cleaned that. I have replaced the fuel filters. The gas line from the tank to the engine holds firm pressure. What next?? Fuel pump??

These carburetors have very tiny jets.-----They plug when fuel sits in the carburetor.----Folks sometimes take 3 tries to get these clean.----So I would clean it again.

Hi,
Is this a BFD 9.9? Do you know what year?
Is the fuel tank vent open all the way?
You might try running it with the fuel tank cap loose or off to eliminate the possibility of the vent being plugged.

Drain the carb into a clear container and let sit for 20 minutes to check for water in the fuel. It's even better if you can get a sample from the very bottom of the tank. Water is sometimes even found in fresh fuel.

Try squeezing the primer bulb when it's dying and see if that helps.

When was the last time the spark plugs were replaced?

Just a few of the basics.

Let us know.

I don't know the year of the motor. I bought it used and Ive had it for more than 6 years. I've never changed the spark plug

If it's a BFD the carb will have an accelerator pump. Did you service the accelerator pump when you cleaned the carb?

If it is the fuel pump failing then squeezing the primer bulb when it tries to die could tell you. If you can keep it running by squeezing the primer then it's likely a weak pump.

If your carb has a black, rubber "bellows" on the side facing you, that is an accelerator pump model. It is held on with a little external snap ring and has a stainless steel pin coming out the top.
See item 12 in the link below.

Or, does your carb look more like the one in this link?

Mine is the first one.

Ok, but does it have that black bellows with the shiny pin coming out? The top of the pin goes into a little black plastic ball that is part of the moving throttle linkage.
