Honda 8hp not peeing, not sure what's gone wrong

First message on this board so thanks in advance. A few months back i picked up a clean Honda 4 stroke 8hp kicker (baaj). When I bought it we ran it in a full size trash can of water. It ran perfect and pee stream was strong. A few months go by and I add it to my boat. First time out with motor down it didn't pee. I tried the heavy mono up the pee hole but that didn't work so I turned it off quickly.

I ordered a new impeller and when I pulled the leg off and removed the water pump cover sure enough no vanes were intact. I was able to get enough good sized pieces out that should have been just enough to account for the missing blades, Pump housing was perfect so i reassembled it with new impeller. I made sure dowel pin was secured and impeller was turning with the drive shaft and I orientated the blades clockwise as well.

Tested this am and still no pee. Dropped leg off again to double check and could find nothing wrong (i did not miss lining up the rubber boot on the pump with the shaft inside the engine either time). Reinstalled and same result. I did try blowing compressed air up pee hole and the submerged lower unit was bubbling strong (water level 1 foot above exhaust ports during all test). When doing the mono up the pee hole, it goes in a total of 7 inches. What am i missing???
 
I recommend taking the right lower cover off, removing the brass fitting for the pee hose from the block and then briefly starting the engine with the lower end submerged below the anti vent plate.

If something is blocking the tell tale bypass, it WILL spit it out if the pump is working correctly.

Be careful though, because there will also be a GUSHER of water.....if the pump is working correctly.

Sounds like this outboard sat for a long time and the impeller (among other things) got dry, hard and brittle.

Also, the rubber pee tube is an item that needs periodic replacement. They get hard and trap small debris like pebbles and twigs while a soft, supple, flexible one will allow that crap to pass.

There's also a very specific way to route that tube or it will get pinched closed when the lower cover is reinstalled.
The tube routes up through a hole in the splash plate and then out to the cover fitting. If not done that way the tube gets caught between the plates edge and the cover and is crushed closed. So, pay attention to that.

One indicator that the tube isn't routed properly is if you can hook up the tube to the cover and the cover is easy to put in place.

If the tube is routed properly and you are working alone, it should be like contortionist-outboard-yoga to get the whole affair hung back on the outboard.

It's a small thing, that little tube, but it can drive you nuts!

Thanks jgmo. I took off the sb plastic cover and disconnected the rubber pee hose from the engine nipple. Still no water, I'm guessing thats nt what you meant as i see no brass fitting??

Hmmm. Apologies.

I stand corrected. I guess they dispensed with the threaded fitting. Too bad though.

Sorry, I'm afraid that I've become dated. I think the latest 8hp I worked on was pre 2007.

Still, there should be a small firehouse of water exiting that nipple so there's either a substantial blockage or the pump just isn't moving any water.

Are you certain that you got the water tube inserted into the water grommet when you reinstalled the gear case?

It's easy to miss that grommet with the tube. And, if you do, little to no water will make it into the engine.
 
Just be aware that those grommets can deteriorate and not seal well. They can deform and get accidentally shoved up into the block by the tube as you are installing the gear case.

I've seen on older outboards where the grommet was not sealing and guiding the water flow properly. As a result, the hole in the casting would enlarge due to erosion. So, inspect your's carefully.

It's doubtful that's the case with yours but it can happen and is illustrative of just how powerful those little waterpumps are.

You may want to consider pulling the thermostat and briefly running the engine to see what kind of flow (or not) you get with the cover off before pulling the lower end..

That would give you an idea about how the pump is working and whether or not there's a major blockage OR that the tube isn't connected.

It might just be that a piece of that old impeller is only stopping up the tell tale bypass. If you see a bunch of water up top, that's likely the case. Trying some stiff wire instead of trimmer string might work. But, if not, you will still need to pull the lower end and maybe try "fishing" from below.

If you have to pull the grommet to do that, I don't recommend reusing it. It may come out in pieces anyway.

With the tstat removed, you can try "downflushing" the system.
Use a towel or rag to fashion plugs so that when you spray into the passage, the velocity of the water can be concentrated to push whatever might be in there out more effectively. You'll have to experiment with where to put your hose spray nozzle and block other passages to get the best flow out the bottom.

Wet work but it can help.

Glad to hear you got it.

These are GREAT little outboards so, in my opinion, you made great purchase.

Just keep in mind though that the carburetor is VERY finicky about what you feed it.

Use clean, fresh fuel (stay away from campground and marina pumps).

Use a fuel stabilizer.

And always completely drain the carb bowl anytime the outboard will not be used for 3 weeks or more.

Do that and keep up your regular maintenence and I predict that your troubles will be few.
