Honda 45A outboard

Hi everyone,

Found this forum while doing some research on a project and am hoping I might get some help. I have a 1994 BF45A outboard that is currently remote steer in my 16' boat. I have found the 16' getting to be smaller each trip and would like to rip out the console and convert to a tiller to free up some space.
My question is whether or not this is even possible?

I have found on Honda's site
https://marine.honda.com/parts/accessories/categories/tiller-handles
In the above link they have a tiller handle that is for a BF40/50D but also says "This tiller handle will only fit D models and later. "
Due to the fact that mine is a 45A, I am trying to clarify if this tiller handle will work. Also if anybody can clarify when D models came out and what changed on them that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

I believe the D models were introduced in 2004 or '05. There may be differences enough that would make their tillers incompatible with your rig. I don't know.

Post your frame and serial numbers and maybe our resident expert will be able to provide you with some useful info.

Good luck.

There are essentially three basic models of the 35 -50 hp Honda. The early ones, like yours have a manual choke on carburetors, the A4 models (2004 and later A models) have a bystarter arrangement and no manual choke, and then the D models, which are fuel injected.

I thought I remembered someone trying to do this once before and I found the thread. http://www.marineengine.com/boat-fo...tiller-conversion&highlight=honda,+tiller,+50

He was successful. His 50 had the same tiller arm as your 45, so an A4 tiller arm should be able to work with your motor. You will have to use your manual choke and you will not be able to use the friction control that comes with the tiller arm.

If you find a deal on a D model, it might work, but you will probably pay more, since there is a different warning light module.

Awesome! Thanks for the info, I did not come across that thread in my searches so appreciate it. Right now the boat is under a tarp with about 2 feet of snow on it but come springtime I will start the swap and keep this thread updated.
