" Joe,
I heard from some folk

" Joe,
I heard from some folks of Florida Sportsman chat that you are the man...

Maybe you can help me..
I have a 3hp Johnson (1997) self contain tank.

I was doing some carb cleaning and I found a clip spring in the bottom of the carburetor bowl.
I know where it goes (just above the float arm on the head of a little pin), but I cant figure how it is supposed to be attached and oriented properly.

I figured out what it does, but I cant quite figure out how it attaches properly.

The clip spring is so tiny. It almost looks like tiny paper clip that someone twited 90 degrees on one side.

It runs fine, but it just wont idle for more than 30 seconds without dieing (or me choking it before it dies).

My theory is that when the motor runs it getts the vacum that sucks the gas going really well. It is filling the bowl faster than it can burn the gas. Since the little spring pin isnt in place it has no way of disengaging the fuel.

Thanks for your help.. "

"Brian.... That tiny clip snap

"Brian.... That tiny clip snaps around the groove on the top of the float needle valve. With the pointed tip of the valve facing down, snap that clip onto the top of the needle valve so that the "L" portion of it hangs over the top of the needle. The "L" portion then simply slides over the top of the metal portion of the float.

It's designed to pull the needle valve down when the float drops down. It's actually not a needed item as the needle would drop down due to incoming fuel and gravity anyhow, but if it's there, use it.

The dying out after 30 seconds could be caused by a clogged fuel filter (attached to the screw in fitting at the tank), or a fouled carburetor. I'd suggest checking the filter, and if the carburetor hasn't been cleaned in some time (especially if the engine's been sitting), remove, clean, and rebuild the carb.

" Joe,
I cleaned the carb and

" Joe,
I cleaned the carb and the fuel line and filter.
I removed the little needle that goes up from the float cup into the air flow area. Still no go.
I reopened the carb and allowed some gas to flow into the cup then reattached. I sprayed some carb cleaner into the air intake to give it a bit of a jump start. It started and ran for about 8 seconds, then died again.

Does the pin that goes from the bowl into the airway of the carb have to be adjusted and lined up a curtain way?? i.e. with the holes on it aligned a curtain way..

The idle adjustment in the middle of the air intake silencer isnt doing anything either. It doest make a diff if it is screwed all the way in or all the way out. It still doesnt run.

It just really seems that the motor is starving for gas. Like there isnt enough pressure in the fuel line to bring enough gas in.

Gas flows well from the opening inside of the bowl when it isnt attached. I just dont know if enough fuel pressure is building up and going up into the top half of the carb and down through the regulator pin.

Have any more ideas??

Thanks in advance..
