Hi
I am planning to buy a 21 feet DC with this motor (pics). The owner does not know how old the motor and drive are. Can anyone help me by looking at this pictures which year model (approx) of motor and drive.

Is it anything you should consider with this motor before buying it?

Thanks in advance!

Thomas

Gosh, how did they get it installed upside down? That's cool.

OK OK I know the pic's wrong. Um, one thing that stands out boldly is the gunk in the bottom of the bilge. Caked up oil/sludge like that means someone....not saying who...failed to keep the boat clean from oil spills and general funky build up. Second that engine/drive looks like it is original to the boat, so the title of the vessel will give the date the boat was built and you'll have your answer about age. There should also be a date code stamped on the engine. Lastly, you should do a complete service which includes all new rubber; hoses, belts, Circulating pump, water pump impellers, drive bellows, etc. and new ignition parts; cap rotor wires plugs, and change all the fluids, and spot treat any rust and check all your electrical connections. New zincs on the drive.

It's nice that the engine has closed cooling as it means the exhausts are probably in good condition, but I would at the very least pop for new riser gaskets so I could pull them off and see what they look like inside. Otherwise looks pretty good from the pics but wish you gave us better images.

Looks like a salt water accident waiting to happen to me.................The outdrive espeacially,

The exhaust manifolds may be ok but the elbows are most likley shot if not ever replaced before.

Also look at the back of the boat, There is a serial number for the boat on the transom (upper right side). the last two or second to last two digits tell you the year the boat was manufactured and if the motor is oringinal that will tell you the year of the motor..........

The photo of the drive looks more like a bravo drive to me then an alpha drive due to looking at the design of where the bottom bolt would be that would hold the back cap/cover on?

There is a chance that the flame arrestor cover might have up to all three of the Engine/Transom Assembly & Drive serial numbers on it, If so can you post the numbers? They should start with something like 0F, 0B, 0C, and then there should be six numbers after that.

If the numbers are not on the flame arrestor cover then look at,

MerCruiser Sterndrives:
The engine serial number tag is located near the starter (by the flywheel housing), the rocker arm or flame arrestor cover.
The sterndrive serial number tag is located on the upper drive shaft housing (starboard side or on the back of the housing)

MerCruiser Inboard Engines:
The inboard engine serial number is located on the plate or sticker on the swivel mounting bracket that mounts

If you double click on the picture, and try to save as, it shows a title of BRAVO.................lol

Based on the valve covers it is at least a 1987...............or newer and with a bravo if original it is at least a 1989 or newer.
