To cut to the chase last year I was on the lake boat was running great and all of a sudden it lost power and lost plane. Changed plugs, power packs, cleaned carbs, and was still the same. 1500rpm was all it would do after all of this. This year I changed the stator, trigger and rectifier still the same. Put 2 new power packs on again but this time it actually will get on plane but it struggles to get there and only will go 36 mph and 4000 rpms. Just to try one more thing I took off the idle stabilizer and that didn't change anything. Could it be one of the power packs defective? How do you test the power packs? I'm totally frustrated but do not want to give up. Compression is good on all cylinders. Fire is good on all cylinders also. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Clay

While I'm sort of new to boat engines I turned wrenches for 40 years on cars and 2 stroke bikes so a little experience. Try taking some tools out to the lake and run your boat good and hard then shut the engine off and pull the plugs (yeah I know easy to do on the water right) if you are running lean in one or more cylinders then the plugs should be light or even white. If there is a spark problem or rich mixture for some reason one or more plugs would be a lot darker or even wet looking. Since your engine seems to be running better it's likely that there will be a difference between cylinders that might give you a place to start guessing from.
If you see a difference that makes you think it could be spark related try swapping ignition parts to see if the problem follows the part.

Thanks guys still working through it. Left side plugs are clean right side plugs are set of darker. Stator is good compression is still good. Coils maybe?

Clean plugs on one side might mean a spark issue.------Sure all the wires are going to the correct terminals on the switch boxes ( powerpacks )

Bingo!!! I was getting ready to put a new power packs on and I was looking at the wiring and realized #2 and #4 wires were side by side. Put them where they should've been and have sure the second pack was correct. Took it to the lake and it runs like a new 1980 blackmax. The bad thing is my mechanic put the power packs on I just assumed it was right. Thanks for all the help I was ready to just sink her i was so frustrated with it. The only thing that is not new is the coils. Thanks again!!!! Time to fish
