Head gasket blown?

My son has a 89 bayliner with a ford 2.3 motor with a carburetor. It overheated than ran normal, overheated, etc. Brought it to a shop and took care of the problem. Ran okay afterward as long as you SLOWLY accelerated to top speed. Had it looked at again with no luck so after taking it out again using the SLOW acceleration method and getting it up to full speed for about 5 min. it begain to slowly loose power until it no longer ran and would not start. Checked the oil and noticed milky white mix. I assume the head gasket is blown because of the milky mix. Would that also explain the way it ran prior to dieing? I am thinking a simple head gasket replacement will take care of the problem? Any info. concerning the problem would be great - thanks

Washed out oil extra friction in cyl, lack of compression scorned cyl walls can happen and cause engine to stall water on spark plug no fire would kill engine as well
Replacing head gasket should solve prolem making sure cyl is not damaged and block in not warped
Is this raw water cooled salt water use ?? Parts will start to rust with water in oil

Alternatively, if you really like the boat, everything else is working well, and are willing to invest in it, consider replacing the the engine with a Jasper MARINE rebuilt. Last I looked, a short block was running about $2400. If you do that, make sure you replace the oil pan with an aluminum one - the originals tend to rust out.
