Ok guys I have a 89 baretta success 200 with a 4.3L omc cobra motor I/O. The engine won't start on a cold start unless the choke is held almost closed but when warm it starts right up but stalls when put into forward or reverse.

sounds like it could need a tune up and check of the shift cable adjustment with respect to ESA switch operation.

Was it running badly last season? Maybe just crappy gas?

Well I just bought the boat about 3 months ago and yesterday was first time out and it ran great for the first couple hours but when I idled around for about a hour and shut it off when I started it back up it would stall every time I put it in gear. It did have about a quarter tank of gas in it from last season and I only put about 5 gallons of gas in it before putting it in the water.

I'd guess you sucked up some gak. Stalling out like that usually means it is starved for fuel. Idles, but when you give it a bit of welly it conks out...classic.

Well I got the boat running great by doing a tune up and stuff and I adjusted the shift cable a little and it shifted into gear great out of the water but when I put it in the water it was still grinds for a second going into forward gear. I'm kind of at a loss right now and not sure what else to do
