Gimbal whine?

I have a 1999 Bayliner Capri 2050 with an Alpha one gen. 2 with 55 hrs. on it. When I get up to about 20 MPH, it starts to whine and continues up to about 25 MPH. Before and after those speeds , it sounds fine. Does this sound like a gimbal bearing? From the posts that I've been reading, the gimbal growels when bad. Any help would be awesome. Thanks. Scott

18 years old with 55 hours? Whining is usually a gear lash issue, too tight or too loose

I know it sounds unbelievable. My brother passed away last year and he bought it new. I bought it from his wife. It was kept in the garage and looks brand new. When I got it, I changed the oil, filter, gas/water separator, impellar, rebuilt the carburator (it would barely run I think because of ethanol gas) and a few other things as well.
I'm not use to a stearn drive! I previously owned a 1983 Ski Nautique that I bought new. It had a 351 with a velvet drive transmission. No slop in the shifter or throttle. Now, with the Bayliner, I have the clunk going into gear and then there is quite a bit of travel before the throttle increases. I didn't have to worry about the trim either because it was a mid engine boat it didn't have to come up on plane, it was on plane when you took off! I know I have to get use to it but it's really different.
I just greased the gimbal bearing. It wouldn't accept grease through the zert fitting at first so I replaced the zert. Da! The grease up in the tube to the bearing was real thick and looked like that greenish blue trailer bearing grease. I cleaned that out with a wire and re-greased it. I was hoping that was the cause of the whine but I haven't had it out since. Thanks Bt Doctur for your help!

Thanks Jeff. I wasn't sure if it was an adjustment or a cable problem. Now I know that I just have to get use to it. I hope I didn't sell the wrong boat! All the Ski Nautique needed was upholstery.

dont kick yourself yet. nautiques are smooth and plane nicely and have the manners of a librarian but thats about the extent of their use on the water. bayliners may have a bad rap but at least you can take some friends with you and they wont have to stumble over a hot motor box

Thanks for putting things into perspective for me 02batsea! It was great for the slalom coarse but that was a long time ago. The Bayliner is in mint condition. I just have to get use to the thing hanging off the transom! Thanks again.
