Gearbox help 200 Mariner 0A914654

I recently bought a 1988 Stratos with a 200 Mariner. Engine serial 0A914654. I took it out today for the first time on a shakedown run and to do some fishing. I was cruising around 50mph when all of a sudden, the RPM's shot up and I stopped moving forward. I actually thought the prop fell off, it was that sudden. I shut it down, lifted the motor to check the prop, it was still there. I fired it back up, put in forward, nothing, reverse nothing. So I used the trolling motor to make it to land and after a few hours, finally got it back on the trailer. I took it home, checked the linkage, it was OK, working normally. If I put it in forward, the ratchet clutch will work, same with reverse. The prop just won't spin with the engine. I need help here. I am mechanically sound, I just don't know a lot about outboards. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there a coupler between the engine and the drive shaft that may have broken, or does the shaft go right into the crank? The guy I bought it from told me he had the power unit rebuilt about 20 hours ago. he also mentioned putting a new water pump/impeller in it last year. When I restarted it on the lake, water was coming out of the back of the engine like it's supposed to. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

You have the plastic or rubber hub prop as it sounds like it spun.? Also check gear oil for metal as it could have chit a pinion gear...

I have a stainless steel 4 blade aftermarket prop. I pulled it off yesterday when I got it home. The splines on the shaft and the prop are both ok.

I found my problem... The driveshaft broke/spun just below the water pump.
