Gas in my oil reservoir

I have a 1999 Mercury 50hp 2 stroke outboard on my pontoon boat. Its been up for the winter until about a month ago. I replaced the cap on the oil reservoir because it was all beat up from using a pair of pliers to open it (was like this when I bought it). While doing that I pulled the little "Vent Assembly" plastic piece from the top of the oil reservoir and when I did the little rubber check valve fell out onto the ground. Now I did not see how the check valve was actually inserted in the little cap and I believe I put it back in backwards (the duck bill portion of it was facing down towards the oil so any pressure could not be vented OUT through the vent). I only started the engine for maybe 10 seconds the other day and then shut it off. Today as I walked by my boat I could smell gas so I took the cowl off and noticed that my oil reservoir was fuller than it had been in the days prior and seemed very "thin". I took the cap off and discovered that there is now gas in my oil reservoir and could see some gas in the oil line going to the engine. Could having the vent assembly essentially blocked (by putting it in backwards) have caused this or do I have other issues? Can I just leave the reservoir empty and start adding oil to my gas tank (its only a 6 gallon tank) or is bypassing the OI more complicated than that? I really appreciate any help you can give me.

I have an early 90's Mariner 60hp and ran it today, when I got back in I pulled the engine cover and now I have a full oil reservoir, no idea what caused it? Any help would be appreciated?
