Fuel Leak, Where???

1989 70hp Johnson. I just took the cowl off and noticed about 6 oz. of fuel laying on the lower cover. With the motor tilted in the trailer condition, the pool is towards the front of the motor. What is leaking? I assume somehow the carbs drained. I may have overlooked an earlier indicator with staining near the transom. I thought that stain was a remnant from lubricating the steering cable.

Thanks,
John

I'm not going to call it normal, I'm not talking about a small amount of fuel. It's something new after 26 years of of use. Something I did different this time was run it tilted to water flush it. Normally I lower it and flush it. I'll monitor it and compare to my normal flush while lowered technique.

You need to realize that when you tip it up the carbs drain 3 carbs =3 float bowls all drain. Check the airbox gasket and the reclaim hose behind the air box.

Did you have the fuel line still hooked up to the motor. The sloshing of the fuel in the tank creates pressure and with the motor tilted up the carb floats open up and the fuel just pours out the vent hole on the carb/s.
That is true if you have OEM portable tanks..built in tanks are vented.

What is the reclaim hose? Does it accept carb drainage? If so, where does the fuel go? Being 26 years old and the carbs and airbox being off a couple of time, it wouldn't surprise me if the gasket leaks.

I fill the inboard tank until both the fill and vent overflow. It is so full that when it warms it leaks at the vent. I use to run the motor dry until just recently. Now I don't disconnect the fuel line. I'm going to return to disconnecting the fuel line.

The reclaim hose is at the bottom of the air box drains excess fuel and pulls it back in the motor. When you open the airbox should be a small hole towards the bottom behind that a hose to the crankcase. Stop filling up your tank till it spills out the vent that could be part of your problem.
