Fuel Gauge Voltage

"My fuel gauge isn't readi

"My fuel gauge isn't reading right. Went thru the booklet trouble shooting manual and it doesn't mention voltage from the gauge from the sensor. I have right at 5 volts with the S wire disconnected to the sensor. The sensor resistances are OK, 30 to 240 ohms.
Should the gauge be supplying 12v to the sensor? This is the original Tempo gauge '75.
Thanks Mike"

"The voltage at the S terminal

"The voltage at the S terminal isn't important as long as it is above zero. The sender unit resistance is the critical factor. Readings as you indicate show the sender functions fine. The gauge works by sensing the current flowing thru the known resistance. Check the gauge by putting 33ohm resistor between S and GND - should show full scale. Do same for 240 ohm - should show E. using 110 ohm should get you 1/2. If that works, check the interconnecting wire as well as verifying the ground connection between the sender and the gauge."
