I have a Honda BF40, which has a decent size inline fuel filter already, but would like to add an external, quality filter. I have had to many issues with poor gas and with small kids I don't get out as frequent as I like. So, here are the two that I was looking at. I would like your opinons and recommendations. I want quality, price isn't really a factor, this is my hunting boat, which gets abused, but I need to be sure my motor is well taken care of since I hunt in horrible conditions.

Option: 1 - Honda 30 GPH

Are there others to consider?

I assume 30 GPH is adequate for a 40 hp 4 stroke. Can't imagine needing 60 GPH.

Let me know your thoughts, opinions and or experiences please.

Thanks alumarine, I almost picked one up at Gander Mountain yesterday for $20 on closeout, but hesitated, because I really like the ability to drain if need be. I also like the price and accessibility for additional parts everytime I need one, compared to the Honda part.

So, I went with the OEM Honda 30 GPH, The filter replacements were a better price, I got the clear canister and drain on the bottom and I will always keep a spare filter on hand. Reviews online said the Honda was the way to go.

Looks like the Honda filter is a private labeled Racor 120R. I have the Suzuki private labeled version of the same (on my Honda). Extremely common filter media (which is a good thing). A bit of lube where the bowl threads onto the filter would be a good idea. Mine was seized bad from a ham fisted previous owner.

Agree that the Honda filter looks like a re-branded Racor. You definitely want the ability to easily drain the filter, which should be done rather frequently, depending on where you get your fuel.

When you mount the filter make sure you will be able to see if there is any water in the clear bottom bowl and make sure you have enough clearance under the drain to easily get a drain pan in there.
