Fogging engine

"Why would the engine need to

"Why would the engine need to be running to fog it down?? What is wrong with removing the ignitiion spark from the center of the distributor cap and then just crank the engine for about 10 to 15 seconds while spraying in the fog oil. Looks like to me this would create the same vacuum and the oily mist would be drawn into all the needed engine components because you could open the throttle all the way. You could even crank it for 10 seconds, let the starter cool and then crank again. What's everyone's thoughts on this?? Removing the plugs to inject oil is a tough job!! The boat has been hauled out to storage 3 weeks ago and there is no water out there to use the earmuff devices."

Cranking the engine w/o water

Cranking the engine w/o water will damage or destroy the impeller. Doing it that way is fine if you intend to replace the impeller anyway.

I don't see anything wrong with this if the drive has had water to it recently. Just don't overdue it. You only need 5 seconds of crank time. You can still put water to the drive as well.

As long as I had a gravity fee

As long as I had a gravity feed going into the outdrive just to lubricate the water pump impeller then you think it would be OK? My main concern is getting the engine fogged well. I'm aware that too much cranking without water will toast the impeller but if I make up a gravity feed to set on the swim platform then this should all be fine.....correct??

"Come on, guys! If a mere 15 s

"Come on, guys! If a mere 15 seconds of starter cranking ate an impeller, we wouldn't be using them in boats! I see people all the time who 'dry start' the engines before launch, to be just they'll start, and the fool things still pump water.

I too fog my engines this way, Ken, and laugh at those who follow the directions on the can. Think of it: Spraying fogging oil into a running engine, where it will instantly burn up in every cylinder. "You need to spray a bunch more, until the motor stalls," others insist. Right! And I'll bet that got that off the same can, eh?

I agree with you. It's just the fact that every service manual screams

about the issue of running water to the OD or it will damage the impeller.

I will assume that it is a reminder to novice tinkerers about hooking up the hose before RUNNING the engine.

I had a 20 year old can of fogging oil that I finally emptied last year. It was a very heavy oil that foamed when it touched metal; good stuff. The latest can I just purchased is a very thin oil in suspension with a solvent carrier. I am not sure if I like it or not. I may go back to using 20 weight electric motor bearing oil; it's clear and adheres well. I have a 1/2 pint squeeze bottle with an 8" pull out stem to reach right into the spark plug's opening. Then I can just crank the engine for 15 secs. w/o the plugs to distribute the oil."
