Fire Honda 135 ignition switch issues

"Our boat recently caught fire and insurance investigators are blaming the ignition switch. Fire started here, ran to the engine and then tank. Wanted to know if anyone had heard of anything similar and if there is any recourse for approaching Honda to look into the matter."

"I think your investigation would need to include how, when and who installed the remote. Unlikely Honda did. You will want to know if all the installation guidelines were followed as per Honda instructions. That circuit should be fuse protected and even if the switch fails, proper fuse and wiring application is supposed to prevent a fire from occuring."

"I have seen two fires in boats which started in the wiring. Once there were enough questions asked and careful inspection, it turned out that the customer installed a new battery or had just connected it for the season and hooked one of the ground wires going to the dash to the positive side of the battery.

In both cases, it burned up the entire dash, wiring harness to the engine and the engine wiring harness.

Luckily, no one was hurt.

Is it possible your fire may have started in the switch only because it happened to be the weakest link in the chain?"
